This month brings attention to radon, a serious health issue.  Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless gas that is found throughout outdoor air.  It is formed as natural deposits of uranium throughout the earth’s crust decay.  As radon decay products are inhaled, they can alter the cells in the lungs.  These alterations can increase the potential for getting lung cancer.  Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking.  An estimated 14,000 people die of radon related lung cancer each year. When it becomes trapped in buildings, it can be elevated to harmful levels. Bullitt County is located in ZONE 1, which poses the highest threat.   You can test for Radon in your home, by picking up a free test kit at the health department.  For more information, call 955-7837, or 543-2415.
